Girls’ soccer and Boys’ futsal teams brought the gold medals home
From March 29 through April 2, our Under-18 girls’ soccer and volleyball teams and Under-18 boys’ futsal and volleyball teams made an incredible showing at the International Schools Sports League Season II. The championship took place at NR Acampamentos in Sapucaí-Mirim, Minas Gerais. Sixty-one of our student-athletes in Grades 9 through 12 who participated counted on the support of our School Teams staff.
The teams played seven other international schools from Brazil – the Pan American School of Porto Alegre, St. Paul’s International School, the Pan American School of Bahia, the American School of Recife, Our Lady of Mercy, the American School of Belo Horizonte, and The British Barra.
And we are happy to report that our Cougars won not one but two first-place gold trophies this season in ISSL!
Two-time champions
The boys’ futsal team is the champion of ISSL 2022-23 for taking first place in both seasons of the championship. In the semifinals, which took place on Saturday, April 1, the Cougars played the American School of Recife. Tied 1-1 at the end of the second half, the Cougars won the match in a penalty shootout, which guaranteed their place in the Finals.
In the Finals on Sunday, the Cougars played St. Paul’s International School. The Cougars scored 2-1, with João Pedro Weyne (Grade 11) and Davi Chaves (Grade 12) scoring the goals.
Senior Lucas Lambach earned Nations’ Most Valuable Player title.
First-place trophy in girls’ soccer
After four years, the first-place trophy for girls’ soccer was back in our athletes’ hands. In a close match against the American School of Belo Horizonte, the Cougars tied the game at the end of the second half with a score of 1-1.
The penalty shootout broke the tie, and the three goals Nations scored against the two made by the American School of Belo Horizonte ensured Nations’ victory!
Grade 10 student Beatriz Galvão won the title of Most Valuable Player for her incredible skill, scoring four goals in five games.
Volleyball
Our volleyball teams showed their mettle throughout the championship!
Girls’ Volleyball Team Captain Carolina Saffad (Grade 11) earned the title of Most Valuable Player, as did our Boys’ Volleyball Team Captain, Tiago Bianchini (Grade 11).
Ready to Final Four!
As season champions, the girls’ soccer and boys’ futsal teams qualified for the Final Four championship, sponsored by the Association of American Schools in Brazil, to be held on May 19 and 20 at the American School of Rio de Janeiro.
The Final Four is a playoff event where the first and second-place teams from two other competitions, the Big 8 and the International Schools Sports League (ISSL), compete for a major title. In 2022, our boys’ soccer team placed first in the championship. This year two teams will represent Nations in the event’s second edition.
