Becoming Middle Schoolers: The Grade 5 Transition Project

A tradition at Nations, the Transition Project helps Grade 5 students and families prepare—emotionally and academically—for Middle School.

From February to June 2025, Grade 5 students at the School of the Nations took part in one of the institution’s most cherished initiatives: the Transition Project. Carefully designed by the school’s counseling team, the project ensures that moving from Elementary to Middle School is a thoughtful, supportive, and meaningful process for students and their families.


The Transition Project has long been a hallmark of Nations’ commitment to holistic education. By guiding students through the shift from Grade 5 to Grade 6, the project supports students both academically and emotionally. Developed by Elementary Counselor Ana Dalmaschio in collaboration with teachers, specialists, and the Middle School staff, the program reflects a deep understanding of this pivotal moment in a young learner’s life.


First Steps 


During the first two months of the semester, students were introduced to the overall goals and structure of the Transition Project. They met with Ms. Ana and took part in initial activities designed to ease them into the upcoming change. They toured the Middle School block, met the staff, and had the opportunity to ask questions about what lies ahead.


This early phase planted the seeds for stronger connections with their future environment and the people who will guide them through it.


Building Bridges 


In April and May, the project deepened its focus. Students enjoyed immersive experiences such as spending a full school day with Grade 6 peers and teachers. These activities fostered new friendships, encouraged collaboration, and offered a glimpse into Middle School routines.


Another highlight was the Friday Night Lights event, an evening filled with pizza, games, and sports that gave students a chance to unwind and bond in a relaxed setting.


Mental and emotional well-being also took center stage during these months. Grade 5 students attended a Q&A session with Dr. Mila Santiago and psychologist Clarissa Dias, experts in adolescent development. The conversations addressed questions and concerns about the teenage years, helping students feel more comfortable about the changes to come.


At the same time, parents were invited to participate in dedicated sessions with the specialists, gaining tools and insights to support their children during this crucial phase.



Looking Ahead 


The project will conclude in June with two meaningful moments. First, families will attend a closing meeting with the Middle School team—a chance to ask final questions and solidify their understanding of the path to the Middle School years. Then, students will take part in a trip to Pousada dos Pireneus, where they’ll celebrate the end of their Elementary journey.


More than a program, the Transition Project embodies the School of the Nations’ educational philosophy. It reflects the institution’s commitment to ensuring that academic transitions are approached with empathy, clear communication, and mutual trust. By recognizing the emotional and developmental aspects of this shift, the school cultivates an environment in which students feel supported, prepared, and understood.
