Middle School students take part in a project about Brazilian writers

Students in Grades 6 through 8 chose Brazilian writers Cecília Meireles, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, and Vinícius de Morais for their 2022-23 Book Fair project

This school year, our Middle School Portuguese team started a project for students in Grades 6 to 8 to promote knowledge and interest in Brazilian literature. Through various activities, students learn about the lives and works of three renowned figures in Brazilian literature: Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Vinícius de Morais, and Cecília Meireles.

Grade 6 students studied the poet Cecília Meireles. Under the guidance of Ms. Fabíola Freitas, they began with the writer’s biography. They learned about her origins, life story, and professional trajectory and then delved into her most important published works, exploring some of the most outstanding points of her writing.

Grade 7 students researched the writer Vinícius de Moraes. With the help of their teacher Raquel Campelo, they conducted introductory research about the author’s trajectory. They studied his impact on Brazilian culture and the literary context reflected in his work. According to Ms. Raquel, the goal is to encourage students to produce their own projects inspired by the work of Moraes.

Finally, students in Grade 8 learned about Carlos Drummond de Andrade working with their teacher, Ms. Isabelle de Jesus. First, they studied the author’s trajectory and biography. Then, focused on learning about children’s and young adult literature and the modernist movement, key components of the Grade 8 curriculum, the teacher explained that she introduced the project to students by showing them the impact Carlos Drummond de Andrade had on modernism.

Students will present their final projects at our 2022-23 Book Fair, which will take place in May next semester.
