Elevating teaching and learning through Cognitive Coaching

Nations staff completes Cognitive Coaching Seminar with a four-day immersive program

In February, Nations School hosted the second module of the Cognitive Coaching seminar, presented by the renowned Thinking Collaborative. This esteemed consulting firm from the United States delivers premier training and consultancy services designed to empower individuals, teams, and organizations.

The seminar saw participation from thirty-nine members of the Nations staff, alongside colleagues from the Pan American School of Bahia. This diverse group, comprising educators, principals, and coordinators, delved into the Foundation Training. This segment of Cognitive Coaching emphasizes the Planning Conversation Map, Reflecting Conversation Map, pivotal Cognitive Coaching instruments, and the exploration of problem-solving strategies via the Problem-Resolving Map.

Structured in the last four days of the immersive program, the seminar provided participants with opportunities to:

  • develop trust and rapport.

  • develop an identity as a mediator of thinking.

  • utilize conversation structures for planning, reflecting, and problem-solving.

  • develop teachers’ autonomy and sense of community.

  • develop higher levels of efficacy, consciousness, craftsmanship, flexibility, and interdependence.

  • apply four support functions: coaching, evaluating, consulting, and collaborating.

  • utilize the coaching tools of pausing, paraphrasing, and posing questions.

  • distinguish among the five forms of feedback.

  • use data to mediate thinking.

Following this transformative experience, our professionals are now eager to apply the acquired tools and insights, aiming to profoundly influence their students' lives through exemplary instruction and guidance.

Cognitive Coaching is a research-grounded method designed to promote teachers' autonomous learning and reflective practices. Through such developmental initiatives, Nations School reaffirms its dedication to perpetual enhancement and the advancement of educational quality for its students.
