They have taken us over!

School of the Nations has been breached! Math Invasion launched its third attack… and students loved it?

Math Invasion Day was a success of astronomical proportions. On November 11, over 80 students from Grade 2 to 5 took part in the third annual Math Invasion in a series of engaging activities. From chess to music and arts, students took part in an interdisciplinary math experience. Each student selected two activities for a Saturday morning of fun and learning.

Math Invasion is an opportunity for students to apply math concepts to day-to-day problems and to some unusual and unexpected situations that involve such areas as sports and music. Whoever said math can’t be fun certainly missed out on our Math Invasion Day.

Check out some of the activities our math team planned for students:

  • Chess – Chess lovers! Come play one of the greatest games of all time!

  • Math in Arts – Come build your own toothpick sculpture, a construction project that can be as simple as poking toothpicks into play dough or as challenging as building a bridge or tower.

  • Jackstraws (Pick-up Sticks) – Come play pick-up sticks, a game that challenges your physical and mental skills! Stick around and have fun!

  • Make curves from straight lines – Come make parabolic curves and see how coordinate planes and graphing skills can make beautiful works of art!

  • CLOSE IT! – Make your own math game: In this workshop, students built their own game to take home. In CLOSE IT!, you add up the dice to close as many tabs as you can!

  • Math Goes Mental! – Solve mental math calculation problems to score points for your team to win. Be ready to run to the different stations and use your athletic abilities!

  • Math Market – Sell, sell, sell! Buy, buy, buy! In this Math Market, students sell old items for money and buy new and exciting products! (No real money or products needed).

  • Ghostbusters – Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters! Get ready to catch ghosts! With your brilliant and quick math skills, make ten as fast as you can to catch ghosts.

  • Scavenger Hunt – Teams search classrooms and the school in an exciting scavenger hunt.

  • Math in Music – Interactive fun in the computer lab! Check out the connection between fractions and music. Use fractions, shapes, and your creativity to create your own rhythms!
