Implementation of the Solid Waste Management Plan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Law 5.610/2016, decree 37,568/2016, obligates institutions in Brasilia that are large generators of waste (those that produce more than 120 liters of waste each day) to manage and organize the collection of recyclable, non-recyclable, and organic waste. Both School campuses fall into this category.

Trash separation currently occurs as follows:

  • Recyclable (Blue Trash Can): paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum.

  • Non-Recyclable (Gray Trash Can): bathroom and infirmary garbage.

  • Organic (Black Trash Can): food waste, dirty napkins, fruit peels.

In April, we collaborated with the company EPM, whose representative is Mr. Filipy Andrade, an environmental engineer. He is advising the School on our Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP). Our cleaning and maintenance staff and educational and administrative leadership were interviewed about expectations and the School’s current recycling procedures. Our goal was to map out the route of trash at School, reduce the waste of food and paper, and organize selective waste collection. The School was praised for our projects and events that promote sustainability, such as our Mandala Garden, School Factory, and Nations Goes Green.

We then prepared the plan in partnership with the School's maintenance and communication departments, and we offered training to all employees during Pedagogical Week in July. We recently carried out one of the last actions of the plan—identifying trash cans according to the waste that should be deposited in each. We count on students, staff, and parents to help us carry out our initiative of having a cleaner, more sustainable, and more environmentally conscious School.

With this in mind, School of the Nations would like to share 9 rules that will help make our SWMP successful.

  1. I separate trash by placing it into the proper trash can (recyclable (blue), non-recyclable (gray), or organic (black)).

  2. I do not bring food into the classroom.

  3. I do not take food beyond the red lines in the cafeteria.

  4. I do not mix waste in the trash cans.

  5. I use reverse logistics to discard electronic waste and lightbulbs.

  6. I place glasses and broken dishes into a protective container.

  7. I do my part at events by following the same procedures but on a larger scale.

  8. I collaborate in implementing environmental projects.

  9. I support the Solid Waste Management Plan.
