Substance abuse prevention: Information is the best medicine

Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) representative visits School to talk with students about substance abuse

FCD specialist and School of the Nations’ guest, Mr. Eduardo Torres, held educational debates with students and parents and gave workshops on drug use, depression, and anxiety. From October 30 through November 1, Mr. Torres discussed many facets of alcohol and drug use, as well as social, cultural, and personal questions related to drug consumption and addiction.

Mr. Torres shared data and discussed the physiological and psychological effects of drugs use. Different from prior years, Mr. Torres spoke of depression and anxiety as well. Students in Grades 5-12 listened to firsthand experiences and received practical information to help them weigh the risks and consider the results of the choices they make.

Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) is a global nonprofit substance abuse prevention organization that promotes health education to schools and universities. For years, FCD has worked worldwide to provide students and the adults who care for them the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to make healthy choices about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.

Our Middle School Guidance Counselor, Ms. Teresa Heloísa believes it is important to educate young people about the risks and realities of substance use. “FCD helps students and their families deal with the social aspects of drug use and helps students consider the outcomes of their choices. We want our students to become responsible, healthy adults.”

Besides working with students, Mr. Eduardo Torres shared with parents some warning signs and other information they should be aware of at home. He also discussed how parents can bring the subject of drug and alcohol use up with their children. This is the third year our School receives a specialist to promote awareness of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use.
