Elementary and Early Childhood students set a pleasant tone for learning on Music Day
In the words of Victor Hugo: “Music expresses that which cannot be said and that which cannot remain silent.” Music is a sonorous art. It touches us emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Music Day is for experiencing new tunes, rhythms, instruments, and the means of expressing oneself musically.
School of the Nations hosted Music Day on October 28 for students in Grades 2–5 and on November 11 for students in Early Childhood. In the past, students would take part in workshops and learn about some of the concepts of music and even build their own musical instruments. This year was different. Students played and experienced the sounds of instruments first-hand. Sara Assis, our Elementary Music Day supervisor, explains.
“We had separate workshops for different types of instruments. We divided them into families: percussion, strings, woodwinds, and brass. Students also took part in singing and street dance classes. Students chose from several options from the Music curriculum. Graders 2–3, for example, who do not have percussion classes, learned how to play the cajón,” she added.
The keyboard, bugle, and bass drum were some of the instruments students learned about. More than fifty students from Grades 2–5 signed up for workshops. At the end of the morning, students who took part in the street dance, singing, and percussion classes gave a wonderful performance that everyone enjoyed.
