We are happy to announce that eight students received AP Scholar Awards in 2016! Gabriel Motta (Grade 12) received the highest award granted by the College Board—AP Scholar with Distinction. He earned the top score of 5 on his Calculus AB AP Exam. Passing AP Calculus with a score of 5 is no small accomplishment, but doing it in Grade 9 is nothing less than exceptional. Stefan Zurman (Grade 9) passed the AP Calculus AB Exam with a perfect score of 5. Age is no limit for a student who is passionate about an area of study.
What is Advanced Placement?
Advanced Placement (AP) classes are university level courses students can take while still in High School. End-of-course exams take place in May each year and are administered by the College Board. AP Courses are rigorous, and most US universities allow students to waive courses if they earn a score of 3 or higher on a final AP Exam, which saves students both time and money as the enter universities abroad. Scores range from 1-5. Earning a score of 3 or higher is a great achievement.

Our students earned three different awards this year—an AP Scholar with Distinction, two AP Scholars with Honors and five AP Scholars. What does earning each type of award entail?
AP Scholar with Distinction
A student is granted an AP Scholar with Distinction Award when he or she receives an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and earns scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. We congratulate Gabriel da Motta (Grade 12) for his achievement.
Gabriel da Motta—Grade 12
Gabriel took 8 AP Exams while in high school—1 in 2013, 3 in 2015 and 4 in 2016. His highest score was a 5 in Calculus AB, which he earned in 2016. Gabriel earned a score of 4 on 5 of his exams!
AP Scholar with Honors
Anna Dudas—Grade 11
Beatriz M. Xavier—Grade 11
Students who earn an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and score 3 or higher on four or more of these exams are granted the AP Scholar with Honor Award. Two students earned this award in 2016—Anna Dudas and Beatriz M. Xavier, both in Grade 11.
Anna took two AP Exams in 2015 and three in 2016. Beatriz took three Exams in 2015 and three in 2016. Both Anna and Beatriz have scored a 5 on one of their Exams.
2016 AP Scholars
A student is granted the AP Scholar Award for receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. In 2016, five students earned this award. The average score of all 19 exams taken by all five students was 3.37 out of a possible 5.0. We congratulate Mariel, Marina, Britney, Gabriel and Isabel for their hard work and dedication.

About The College Board and Advanced Placement Exams
The College Board develops and maintains courses in various subjects, and coordinates all annual Advanced Placement exams. The College Board serves over 7 million students in the U.S. and around the world with testing and the university application process.
The Advanced Placement Program offers high school students the opportunity to study college-level courses during high school and to receive university credit for their work. Experts and university-level educators create the AP curriculum in each subject. To be designated as and Advanced Placement course, the College Board must first audit it to ensure it meets Advanced Placement curricular requirements and rigor. Advanced Placement classes require high-level calculating and critical thinking skills that students will encounter in their first year at universities.
